Als Gin bezeichnet man eine Spirituose mit Wacholder, die mindestens 37,5% Alkohol enthält. Obwohl Gin momentan stark im Trend liegt, ist das Getränk keineswegs eine Erfindung der Moderne. Die frühesten Berichte über den Wacholderschnaps stammen vom hessisch-niederländischen Arzt François de la Boe, der im 17. Jahrhundert lebte. Zunächst unter dem Namen Genever bekannt, wurde die Spirituose Ende des 17. Jahrhundert von Wilhelm III. von Oranien-Nassau nach England eingeführt, nachdem dieser den englischen Thron bestieg. So erhielt der Schnaps auch seinen englischen und heute international gängigen Namen „Gin“.

Heute unterscheidet man zwischen verschiedenen Ginarten:

Gin

Das Aroma eines einfachen Gins wird nicht durch die Redestillation mit Botanicals gewonnen. Stattdessen werden die pflanzlichen Stoffe zur Aromatisierung direkt hinzugegeben. Um den Namen Gin tragen zu dürfen, muss Wacholder als Hauptaroma erkennbar sein.

Distilled Gin

Im Gegensatz dazu, werden beim Distilled Gin Aromen durch die Redistillation mit Wacholder und anderen pflanzlichen Stoffen gewonnen. Es dürfen zudem weitere Aroma- oder Farbstoffe nach der Destillation hinzugegeben werden.

London Gin

Um einen London Gin herzustellen, müssen strenge Auflagen eingehalten werden. Er darf ausschliesslich aus Ethylalkohol aus landwirtschaftlichem Ursprung hergestellt werden, darf nicht mehr als 0,1 g Zucker pro Liter enthalten und darf weder zugesetzte Farbstoffe noch Aromen enthalten. Das Aroma des London Gin darf ausserdem ausschliesslich durch die einmalige Destillation mit pflanzlichen Stoffen gewonnen werden. Es ist nicht erlaubt, Botanicals nach der Destillation hinzufügen. Wird kein Zucker beigesetzt, spricht man von einem London Dry Gin.

Obwohl Gin pur getrunken werden kann, ist er besonders in Cocktails beliebt. Zu den beliebtesten Gin Cocktails zählen etwa Martini, Gin and Tonic, Pimm’s Cup, Moon River, Tom Collins, French 75, Gin Fizz und Negroni.
