Jack Daniel’s Whisky is made in Lynchburg, Tennessee. This small town was officially founded in 1841 after a gristmill and a cotton mill were established there. Today, about 6000 inhabitants live in the tranquil town.
The history of Jack Daniel’s
Jack Daniel was likely born in 1949 and was the youngest of ten children. After his mother died, Jack’s father remarried. Unfortunately, Jack didn’t get along with new step mother and after his father died in the American Civil War, he ran away from home and practically became an orphan.
As a young teenager, Jack Daniel was taken in by Dan Call, a grocer, priest and distiller. Jack worked for him for the next several years. One of Call’s slaves, Nathan Nearest Green, had taught himself how to produce whisky and showed Jack at an early age how he could produce his own whisky.
After a long legal battle with his siblings, Jack received a part of the inheritance his father left and invested it in his own distillery. At first, he ran the distillery together with Call, who left for religious reasons a few years later. He hired Nathan Nearest Green as his first master distiller, who had become a free man after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Since Daniel remained unmarried and without kids, he took his nephew Lemuel Motlow under his wing and put him in charge of accounting. When Daniel’s health worsened in the beginning of the 20th century, he gave the distillery to two of his nephews. Motlow then purchased the distillery from the other nephew and led the distillery for 40 years. During this time, many difficulties emerged, starting with Prohibition which was passed in Tennessee in 2010.
In 1956, Jack Daniel’s was sold to Brown-Forman. Unlike many other whisky distilleries, Jack Daniel’s is a whisky producer that was sold only once. From the 1950s on, the demand for the Tennessee whisky exceeded the supply for decades. This didn’t change until the 70s when Brown-Forman replaced the old distillery with a new plant. Since the 80s, Jack Daniel’s has expanded its assortment with special bottlings like Gentleman Jack, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel and a selection of whisky liqueurs like Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey.
Today, Jack Daniel’s is the best-selling whisky brand from the US.
