The history of Pyrat

Pyrat rum is a product of the Patrón Spirits Company. The company is mostly known for its tequila series Patrón, however, it also distributes a coffee liqueur with a tequila base (XO Café), different tequila fruit liqueurs and even a vodka named Ultimat.

The Patrón Spirits Company was founded in 1989 and was one of the trailblazers in the ultra-premium tequila market. With a focus on exceptional premium products, entrepreneurs Ed Brown and Dave Wilson brought the brand to success. However, instead of resting on their laurels, Ed and Dave pursued new projects. After the release of Roca Patrón, a series of handmade tequilas and the acquisition of a Polish premium vodka called Ultimat Vodka, the company focused on the development and the distribution of Pyrat rum – the first rum in the assortment of Patrón Spirits.

The origin of the Pyrat rum lies in the former Planters Distillery in Anguilla. This distillery was founded in the 19th century by the English seaman C.J. Planter, who had married the daughter of a sugar cane producer. At first, Planters rum was mostly purchased and traded by pirates, which is how it spread to Europe and South East Asia. C.J. Planter was also the one who gave the rum its mascot: Hoti, the Zen patron saint can be found on every bottle.

In 1995, Anguilla Rums Ltd. bought the brand and re-released the rum. One year later, the Patrón Spirits Company joined the business and a rebranding under the name Pyrat followed.

A few years later, the production was relocated to Guyana where the elegant rum is bottled by Demerara Distillers today.

How is Pyrat rum produced?

To produce Pyrat Rum, nine high-quality molasses rums from different Caribbean regions are blended together. The single rums are traditionally produced in column or pot stills, which affects their aroma and texture. The rums then mature separately from three to 15 years in casks. Afterwards, the rums are blended and finished in French Limousin oak casks and American white oak casks.
