The history of Kraken Rum
Kraken Rum is one of the more modern rum brands on the market. The rum was introduced by Proximo Spirits in 2010. Proximo Spirits is known as the distributor of Jose Cuervo, Bushmills, Boodles Gin and Creyente, among other products. Kraken Rum is the only rum in the assortment.
Since its release, Kraken Rum has become a real legend on the market. This is not only due to the special aroma of the spirit, but also thanks to the design and branding of the bottle.
The inspiration
The name and the design of Kraken are inspired by the kraken, a mythological cephalopod-like sea monster, which is said to be responsible for many sunken ships. The animal plays an important role in Nordic mythology. In his book “The Natural History of Norway”, Danish historian Erik Pontoppidan even described a kraken with a length of 2.5 kilometres.
But why name a rum after a sea monster? The reason lies in a special story: According to legend, a Caribbean ship loaded with black spiced rum never reached its goal. It was suspected that the kraken was responsible for the tragedy, since casks with dark ink stains were found floating in the ocean. When these casks were finally delivered to the queen of Norway, she took a special liking to this mysterious rum. To honour the killed seamen, the rum received the name Kraken.
How is Kraken Rum produced?
The base rum for Kraken is made in Trinidad and Tobago from locally grown sugar cane. After a maturation of about one and a half years, the rum is blended with eleven different spices. Among these are ginger, cinnamon, cloves and a few secret ingredients.
What makes the bottle so special is its Victorian style with two circular handles. These were traditionally added to bottles to make them easier to handle and prevent them from breaking.
What does Kraken Rum taste like?
Kraken Rum offers a pleasing combination of sweetness and spiciness. The full-bodied aromas are always complex yet well-balanced. A light spiciness adds a special kick. At the nose, the rum presents itself with light chocolate aromas, coffee and cinnamon; at the palate, more intense chocolate aromas follow and are accompanied by vanilla, molasses and typical rum notes. The finish is wonderfully warm with plenty of vanilla and a hint of pepper.
