Golden Rum

What is rum?

Rum is a distilled, alcoholic beverage which is produced from sugarcane products (sugarcane juice or molasses). After fermentation, the distillation and maturation in oak casks follows.

What is golden rum?

The maturation in oak casks is noticeable in the colour of the rum since rum is always white when it’s freshly distilled. If the rum matures for a short time, it usually keeps its transparent colour and it’s referred to as “white rum”. Long matured brown rums, however, get their colour through years of particle exchanges with the casks. If a rum is golden or amber, this can indicate a maturation of medium-length: The spirit had the chance to extract colour and aromas from the casks, however, not long enough to develop a deep brown colour.

How does golden rum taste?

Due to its medium-length maturation, golden rum is usually more complex and heavier in its aroma than white rum, but doesn’t taste as strong of caramel and molasses like brown rum. Golden rum can be the ideal compromise between the lightness and miscibility of white rum and the heavy aroma of brown rum.

So much for the theory; in practice, the colour of a rum unfortunately doesn’t always indicate the length of the maturation. Many producers add caramel colour, a food colouring agent, to their rums to give them a darker or simply nicer colour. The fuller, darker colour is supposed to give the impression of higher quality. And even the appearance of white rum can be misleading: White rums can actually be aged for a long time as long as they’re filtered before the bottling.

The best indications of the authenticity of a rum can be found on the label of the bottle. For example, the label may contain the time of maturation in years. If you can’t find a concrete number, look for terms like anejo (matured), reserva (aged for at least two years) or gran reserva (aged for at least 5 years).
