The location
Diplomático Rum originates in Venezuela. The distillery is located in the foothills of the Andes in Terepaima National Park, which lies in the north part of the country. Even though Venezuela has been in the news due to economic and political difficulties in the last few years, it’s important not to forget that the country has played an important role in the history of rum. In fact, sugar cane and rum were one of the main exports of the country until the 1960s.
The tropical climate and the diverse landscape create great conditions for the cultivation of sugar cane and the production of rum, which is why several special premium rum brands were developed there.
Among the reasons for the high quality of Venezuelan rum are certain governmental regulations: For example, Venezuelan rum has to mature for at least two years and may not be refilled to compensate for losses due to evaporation.
The history of Diplomático
The history of Diplomático starts with Don Juancho, a Venezuelan nobleman who travelled the world and was always on the lookout for special spirits for his personal collection. Don Juancho’s ambition and his exclusive collection inspired a handful of producers who dedicated their own distilleries to him. After a while, the distilleries united to form the Destilerias Unidas S.A. (DUSA), which produces Diplomático Rum today.
How is Diplomático Rum produced?
Diplomático rum is made from sugar cane, honey and sugar cane molasses. For optimal results, molasses with a high sugar content and low viscosity is chosen. The yeast is cultivated in the distillery and affects the aroma and the fermentation process. Depending on the type of rum, the molasses ferments for one to two days.
The choice of the still depends on the type of the rum as well. Since the DUSA owns various stills, the company is particularly flexible when it comes to the creation of different rums. If you’re interested in the character of the different stills, you can try a rum from the Diplomático Distillery Collection: The releases differ from each other in the choice of the still (for example, barbet column still or batch kettle), which is how they achieve a unique aroma.
For maturation, Diplomático rums spend several years in different cask types, including Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks. Special bottlings, for example the rums from the Prestige Range, go through a second maturation process.
The distillery is proud to have been awarded with the ISO 14001 for sustainability as the producers place special importance on having a positive environmental impact.
