The history of Brugal
The history of Brugal started in the second half of the 19th century. Back then, Spaniard Andrés Brugal Montaner, who had immigrated to Sitges in Catalonia, made a daring move that took him to the Dominican Republic – or more precisely, Puerto Plata.
On a journey to Cuba, Montaner discovered his fascination for rum production. After teaching himself the most important skills, he founded Brugal & Co. in Puerto Plata in 1888 and released his first dark rum.
What makes Andrés Brugal Montaner different from other founders of his time was his tireless inventor spirit. This is how he became the first rum producer in the Dominican Republic to mature rums in oak casks. Soon the construction of the first big warehouses followed as the matured rum turned out to be exceptionally popular.
In the 20th century, the company focused mostly on its expansion and the development of new products. In 1952, the Brugal Añejo was added to the assortment. In 1976, the Extra Viejo followed and became the first premium rum from the Dominican Republic.
Today’s chairmen of the company are direct descendants of Montaner. Besides Puerto Plata, where Brugal still produces rum, new facilities exist in Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros. By purchasing a majority of the company’s stocks, Brugal was acquired by the Edrington Group in 2008. The Edrington Group is a large Scottish spirit company that is also known for owning Macallan, Glenrothes and Highland Park. The investment was worth it – Brugal is now one of the most successful rum brands in the world.
How is Brugal Rum produced?
Brugal Rum matures for at least two years in oak casks until the rum takes on a darker tint and a complex yet harmonious aroma develops. The Brugal Añejo Superior Rum matures for about five years while the Brugal 1888 Gran Reserva Familiar is stored in casks for 14 years. The casks are selected carefully and range from American ex-bourbon casks to European ex-sherry casks. The buildings being laid out north to south results in the casks receiving a lot of warmth from the Dominican sun.
