The historical Captain Morgan
Captain Morgan actually existed. Privateer Henry Morgan is the inspiration for the popular rum brand. Born in Wales in 1635, he decided to leave his home as a 19-year old to go on an adventure and represent the interests of Great Britain as a rightful privateer. At the tender age of 27, he had already become captain of his own ship. 11 years later, he was appointed a Knight Bachelor by Charles II. In 1674, his influence spread to the mainland when he was appointed as lieutenant governor of Jamaica. There, he bought three large sugar cane plantations where he spent the last years of his life.
The history of Captain Morgan Rum
Even though the inspiration for Captain Morgan Rum comes from the 17th century, it is a modern brand. In 1944, the Canadian company Seagram started with the production of rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company. For this endeavour, CEO Samuel Bronfman decided to buy the Jamaican distillery Long Pond. Among their clients were the Levy Brothers, pharmacists who flavoured the rum with herbs and spices. Seagram acquired the licence for the distribution of the spiced rum and soon started to market it internationally.
It didn’t take long for the commercial breakthrough. When the taxes in Jamaica were reduced drastically to boost the creation of new jobs, Seagram built new plants close to San Juan. In the 80s, Seagram finally sold Captain Morgan to Destilería Serrallés, a traditional rum producer that had been in the business since 1865 and had built its reputation with the brand Don Q.
Since 2001, Captain Morgan has been owned by Diageo.
How is Captain Morgan rum produced?
Captain Morgan rum is a molasses-based rum. After the fermentation of the molasses with yeast and sugar, the distillation process follows. Next, the spirit matures in charred oak casks which results not only in a darkening of the colour but also in the refinement of the aroma. To receive a well-balanced taste, different rum varieties are blended together. To create the spiced rum, herbs and spices are added to the rum before bottling.
